My father built our home in 1995 and historical permits show it cost him around $300,000 to build the house at the time. Current assessments place an estimated value of the building alone at around $500,000-$600,000 not including the land underneath it. I read somewhere it is actually more expensive to buy land and try to build a new house over it but you have the freedom to customize the home.
